Adventures of Vet Doest part three

As promised , the weekly update. i ended the first one where i wished the Sunday duty would be easier. it was not. well it seemed to be, but in the evening things got busy. A Lovely dog with a pneumonia, followed by a puppy with intestinal problem. Than the call came someone his dog had been in a fight. He rushed the dog over because it was really bad. He seemed braindead, at arrival but was still breathing. Had a pulse..We put in the iv line in asap (had it prepared already = advantage of calling in that you are on your way) and then he stopped breathing, I checked, did some hart massage but he was still as a rock with very pale mucous membranes. The hardest part is to tell the people that their pet just died, despite whatever you tried, It was hard but they understood. It turned out he had a massive bleeding under the skin from his femoral artery. So this is why it sucks to be a vet. one minute your trying to safe a life, the next minute you have to give bad news, and the next minute your with the other client with their cute puppy telling the that their puppy should be fine. And o by the way yes the other people that barged in 5 minutes earlier, yes they left without their dog because it is well, uhmm ,yes dead. Sigh. Weekend on call ended with a Bang.

Monday was the usual ;”the moment you regret you have been away for a week on a conference,” monday. Booked solid but fun and thank god the clients had a lot of patience. A bunch of cuter than cute chihuahuas , annual checks, vaccines and than a phone call of a gentleman of what to do with the neighbors dogs that kept escaping and had caused havoc in the house he rents out. now even killed a dog. I politely explained that the best thing to do was , communicate with the owner, to sort out the problem, and if that does not work than call 917 and report the incidence with the animal police. In the afternoon a macaw came in that weighted 75% of what he should have been. He did not make it. So sad, especially when after doing the autopsie it became clear that had the owner brought him in earlier we would have been able to safe him probably…
The acute kidney failure patient was submitted. So instead of a good night sleep i pulled an allnighter watching netflix with our baby chicks and checking on the patient. He seemed to go a bit better, but the kidneys did not kick into working mode despite all the medication and fluid therapy…….because of the non kidney function he started to seizure the next day, so he was humanely euthanized in the arms of his owner.

But we also had a lot of good stuff happening. Puppy eating poison rushed in, got injections and puked everything out, including venom.( yes that happens quite often because a lot of people don't realize that rats can also drag the poison and drop it somewhere their pets can reach it). I operated a 30 yrs old amazon with a huge tumor, and a week later she is now talking and imitating the phone, greeting me with the happiest bon dia! every time i walk into the practice. A great family effort of saving 2 kittens that were attacked by rats, we “saved “ them by euthanasia, but boy was I happy i could relief them from their pain. Saturday morning was crazy busy with a line up of weimaraners, birds and jackrussels We had fun. Saturday we released a heron that was rescued by people from botica Dominguito 2 months earlier. We had our chicken talk where the number of chickens present outnumbered the amount of people but it was a great evening. Sunday we released the rat poison victim Owl back into his back yard at Fuik. And than we rolled into this week. With all our patients, a pyometra patient with an atypical presentation ( but i nailed it with the ultrasound) (pyometra is an infected uterus which very often occurs about 2 months after their period.) budgie surgery (tumor on the eye),( he weights 45 grams, diamond the tortoise owned by a very concerned 8 year old girl, who totally ruled the consultation, so cute, and i enjoyed the cultural mix of clients, i picked up some mandarin commandos for a dog…..Operation day with the ussual spays , dental work and than the challenge of operating a hart patient, we managed, and it was fun. And i am really exited about the release of our longterm seaturle patient this saturday at Wakawa.. Hope you enjoyed reading the vetdoest adventures part 2. part 3 is happening as you read!
